Well, the sawdust has been flying here at BTE, and production of the first batch of Super Flyin' King kits is well under way. They probably won't make it out the door this week, but certainly next week is likely. I know it's been a long wait, but it should get to those of you who have ordered in plenty of time for an enjoyable winter project. If you haven't ordered yet, it's time!

The photos you see here were taken by Wally Barrus at the QSAA Fly-In in Las Vegas. I attended this year as both a vendor and a pilot - kept busy! The show itself was down in attendance, but those who were there seemed to love the SFK and were hopefully impressed by its flights. Well, at least the flights before the clunk line fell off in my tank. Took a couple of deadsticks to figure that out - sure glad we had lots of room on that dry lake... Thanks for the photos, Wally.
The SFK kit will include all the hardware necessary for mounting the aluminum wing joiners. Other than that, I'm leaving it up to you to supply the remaining hardware and accessories. However, BTE will offer several optional accessory items for those of you who don't feel like scrounging for every little item. Please let me know some time this week if you want any of the following options:
Main Wheel Package - This includes two 7" Sullivan wheels (look
great on mine!), two hardened steel 5/16" axle bolts, and various mounting
hardware for the wheels and landing gear. I know, nobody likes to use bolts for axles, but these ones
have a smooth shoulder where the wheel rides.
In addition, if you order this package, I will drill your aluminum
landing gear for the six mounting bolts that are included.
Normally, the gear is supplied un-drilled.
The retail price for all this is $73.00 (the wheels are $33.87 each!).
BTE Price. . . . . $59.95
Tailwheel Package
- This includes a Sig Extra-Large Leafspring Tailwheel Assembly, a Du-Bro
1-3/4" Tailwheel, a wheel collar and mounting hardware, just like I used on
my prototype. So far it's held up
fine and seems tobe up to the task. These
items together retail $26.14. BTE
Price. . . . . $22.95
STOL Wingtip
Blocks - The fancy STOL wingtips on my model don't come with the kit, but
you can add them if you wish. If you want to carve your own, I can supply light
balsa blocks with your kit along with carving instructions. Keep in mind, these are big blocks of balsa, 3" x
4" x 26". BTE Price. . . . . $29.95
STOL Wingtips,
Rough Cut - Then again, if you want to save about a day of carving and
sanding, I can rough cut the tips for you.
They will still need a final sanding once you attach them to your wing,
but they'll be pretty close. It's a
dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it. BTE
Price. . . . . $79.95
Tail Brace Wire
Kit - I've decided that tail brace wires are required for this model.
Actually, it's a tough call. It
might be okay without them, but I didn't want to find out the hard way that I
was wrong. So I added wires to my tail (started with threaded rods, but
a clevis broke during engine tests). These
wires have held up just fine, but there are sturdier and more expensive
alternatives out there. This tail
brace wire kit includes all the nylon-coated steel cable, steel attach straps,
crimps, and hardware you need. BTE
Price. . . . . $9.95
Du-Bro 4-40
Pull-Pull Cable System - Recommended for Rudder and Tailwheel.
BTE Price. . . . . $7.95 each
Sig XX-Brand
Hinges - I used 29 of these on my prototype.
Price includes 30 hinges. BTE
Price. . . . . $8.95
Rout-A-Bit Tool - Fits
in your Dremel and cuts grooves for windows, hatches, etc...
BTE Price. . . . . $25.00
Fourmost Medium
Window Flange Material - My prototype needed four packages to do the
windows. It takes some patience to
make the corners fit nice and tight, but it sure looks professional.
BTE Price. . . . . $3.95 pkg.
If you have any questions about any of these options or the SFK kit, please feel free to call or e-mail.
